Why Does Your Furnace Smell When You Turn It On?

The weather is getting colder in Savage and we will have to turn our furnaces on soon. This fall period we get a great deal of furnace repair calls from homeowners declaring that they smell something when they turn their furnace on for the first time. Most likely you haven’t been operating your furnace since it was last cold. In that time dust may have gathered inside your system. The first time you turn on your furnace, that dust will burn off. The smell from this will move through your ducts throughout your house. This doesn’t usually pose any sort of hazard and the smell will usually be gone after a little bit. However, if the scent does not diminish after a bit, please inform one of our pros.

Another reason you could be smelling an unusual scent from your furnace is that your air filter may have become obstructed. This can cause your blower motor to get overused and could cause the motor, and/or the furnace to overheat.

Your furnace is going to be an important part of your life in the near future. If you haven’t yet scheduled your regular furnace repair, now is the occasion. Our experts will make sure your system is running safely and clean the internal components before you have to fret about a burning smell.
