Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Savage

The weather is finally warming up and soon you might have to switch over to your air conditioner. Along with setting up your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Gopher Heating and Air Conditioning, there are a few other tasks you can do to keep cozy and save money this season.

During the in-between season in Savage, those far too few spring temps, you probably use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner might not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you on your bills? In order to do that you have to be sure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning correctly. Here’s a handful of things to remember:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by a couple degrees, in addition to running your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level very much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lessening the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust according to the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to be sure the air is blowing down. You can stand underneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, adjust the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually cool your air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature on the thermostat.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to feel the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
