Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be traced back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system may be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises at the end of their life. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
